Next Stop: Our Sonic Odyssey to the 1960s steam train

Setting the Stage:
Let’s take you on a journey through “Next Stop,” an enthralling escape room-style video game that unfolds against the backdrop of a 1960s steam train during a tumultuous era marked by the ‘Beeching Cuts.’ As the wheels of this historic locomotive traverse the iconic Waverly route, players embark on a quest to unlock mysteries and conquer intricate puzzles.
A Symphony of Sound and Music:
Picture this: “Next Stop,” a visually captivating game, adorned with an enchanting soundscape, and complemented by an original score crafted by our very own James Clarkson. This convergence of sound and music propels players back in time and immerses them in an intricate narrative reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s enigmatic tales.
For this sound design work, we made it our purpose to immerse players in a tapestry of sound that wraps around them. This audio cocoon fosters a sense of safety, keeping in harmony with the game’s historical setting, all while allowing players to channel their focus into the thrilling puzzles at hand.
Echoes of the Past:
From the get-go, the Black Goblin team thought that the elegant visuals of “Next Stop” deserved equally stunning audio. To achieve this, we’ve meticulously tailored the sound to exude a pastel tonality. Replete with reverberating ambient sounds and warm, present sound effects, our audio elements become beacons, guiding players through the virtual realm and revealing the vital clues they need.
Mastering Middleware:
We are particularly proud of our proficiency in using middleware and seamlessly integrating sound into game engines, especially within the Unity platform. This demanded a meticulous choreography of sound effects, ambient audio, and foley work to tell a seamless narrative. In a non-linear gaming environment, sound becomes our secret ally, gently guiding players and leading them toward discovery and success.
In Summary:
“Next Stop” is more than just a video game; it’s an auditory odyssey that transcends time and space. For our team, it’s a testament to how powerful sound design can be in transporting players through history, guiding them through intricate puzzles while preserving the air of mystery and nostalgia from a bygone era. As players step into the captivating world of “Next Stop,” they’re embarking on a sonic journey that transcends the limits of mere entertainment, turning the game into a rich and evocative narrative experience.
